WHEN WINTER MET SPRING

Cherry trees blooming covered in snow, in a rare encounter of spring with winter.

The only color photographic series in this exhibition, When Winter Met Spring documents a rare encounter between the harshness of winter and the delicacy of spring in Paris. In March 2018, Emilia photographed the aftermath of an unexpected snowfall that blanketed the first cherry blossoms, creating a striking contrast between the softness of the petals and the roughness of the freshly fallen snow.

In addition to capturing the brief moment of coexistence between two seasons, the series inevitably prompts us to reflect on the consequences of climate change unfolding across the planet. At the same time, it reveals a gaze capable of perceiving beauty even in extreme situations.

As viewers contemplate these peaceful cherry trees—imported from Japan to France—covered in snow in the midst of spring, they are invited to reflect on the inevitable transience of natural phenomena and of human existence itself. Thus, When Winter Met Spring transforms a singular climatic event into a visual meditation on the beauty and fragility of life.

March 19, 2018, was the last day of winter, undoubtedly the harshest winter I had seen in the last 15 years living in Europe. The next day, spring was officially beginning, and the cherry trees in the park next to my house showed their first blossoms. They are my favorite trees, and I eagerly await their bloom.

But on the 19th, the day awoke to a surreal snowstorm. Paris was completely white again, but this time it covered the colors of the first flowers that had bloomed. It was the beauty of two seasons overflowing, in a strong yet delicate encounter. Symbolizing the ephemeral coexistence of these two seasons. The minimalist and contrasting composition evokes tranquility, introspection, and a deep appreciation for the natural and conflicting cycles of life.
