OpenWalls – British Journal of Photography | award

Black and white double exposure of swans on the River Seine by Emilia Brandão, from the series Sentimental Journey, awarded at OpenWalls Arles by British Journal of Photography at Galerie Huit Arles

Emilia Brandão Carneiro is one of the winners of OpenWalls Arles 2023, the international photography award created by British Journal of Photography in collaboration with Galerie Huit Arles.

Now in its fourth edition, OpenWalls invites emerging and established photographers to show their work in Arles, alongside Les Rencontres d’Arles, one of the most important annual events in the photography world. This year’s theme was Truth, an open invitation to explore subjects such as AI, political realities, storytelling and self-discovery. Emília’s image, from her series Sentimental Journey, was selected as one of the 50 winning single images, chosen from entries from around the world.

The winning works were chosen by an international jury that included Sarah Leen, former Director of Photography at National Geographic, Michael Famighetti, editor of Aperture, and Azu Nwagbogu, director of the Lagos Photo Festival.

The exhibition ran from 5 July to 23 September 2023 at Galerie Huit Arles, a 17th-century mansion in the historic centre of the city.

For Emilia, the recognition is a meaningful moment in her work as a fine art photographer, and a chance to share Sentimental Journey with an international audience.
