Profile Emilia Brandão Carneiro on PhotoVogue
Brazilian photographer Emilia Brandão Carneiro has series selected by PhotoVogue
Between 2020 and 2022, Condé Nast’s global photography platform picked work ranging from portraits of Madrid healthcare workers to swans on the Seine.
Brazilian photographer Emilia Brandão Carneiro, born in São Paulo in 1982 and based in Europe since 2008, had several series selected by PhotoVogue, Condé Nast’s global photography platform, between 2020 and 2022. The selection spans documentary and fine art projects, all tied together by a tender, attentive gaze on people, animals and landscapes.
PhotoVogue works as a showcase and curatorial space linked to Vogue Italia. Photographers from many countries submit their work, and professional photo editors review it, which makes a selection an editorial decision rather than a popularity count. Emilia’s work can be seen on her PhotoVogue portfolio.
One of the chosen projects is Time to Heal, made in spring 2020, when Madrid was at the centre of the Covid-19 crisis. Emilia set up a studio inside three hospitals and photographed 150 workers, from doctors and nurses to cleaning staff, in black and white. The series was shown at Leica Gallery Madrid and covered by outlets including El Mundo, Elle Spain and Condé Nast Traveler. Discover the project.
Sentimental Journey (2022) turns the camera to the swans of the Seine in Paris, moving away from the postcard image of the bird. The series earned an Honorable Mention at the 18th Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers and was shown at Galería F&deO in Madrid. According to Cultura Inquieta, four of its images were chosen by PhotoVogue.
In When Winter Met Spring, also selected in 2022, Emilia recorded an unexpected snowfall that covered Paris’s first cherry blossoms in March 2018. It is the only colour series in the selection. See the series.
Berni follows the last days of a retired show-jumping horse in a field in France, moving between figurative portrait and near-abstraction. See the series.
What the selection says about her work
Announcing the selection on her channels, the photographer said she was honoured by the recognition and noted that some of the platform’s works are available in her online shop. A Leica ambassador since 2020, Emilia also collaborates with Vogue, GQ, Elle and Glamour. The subjects change, but the tenderness of the gaze does not, and that consistency turns PhotoVogue’s choices into chapters of one body of work.
